Naval Oceanography and Sofar Ocean announce collaboration to advance ocean weather forecasting, data collection

Sofar Ocean and U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command are partnering to scale ocean data collection and improve marine weather forecasting.

Sofar and Naval Oceanography signed a five-year Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to leverage Sofar's planetary scale ocean data and rapidly deployable devices to expand the Navy’s ocean observation and prediction efforts. The CRADA was formalized in July of 2023 at a joint knowledge sharing event at Naval Oceanography’s headquarters at NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

“Sofar’s technology contributes to the core capabilities of collecting accurate data and delivering at the speed and scale required to make the difference in operational war fighting advantage, increased battle space awareness, and ensure safety of flight and navigation,” said Rear Admiral Ronald J. Piret, Oceanographer of the Navy and Commander, U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command.
